8 Bells Brewing Company

The key to a good beer: keep it simple. That’s the mission statement at 8 Bells. Established in 1994, this craft brewery sticks to small batches and local sources, and the results are undeniable. From classic ales and stouts to barleywine-style brews finished with seasonal berries or fruits, 8 Bells has a beer for you.

Anemones Closer Fitness Center

Formerly known as The Gym, this establishment has undergone a major rebranding in recent years thanks to the partnership between the original owner, Stanley Woodland, and current owner, Violet Brooks. The new blood helped to bring more variety to the gym, which now appeals not only to gruff fishermen, but tourists seeking yoga classes and locals interested in less extreme workouts. Violet fought to bring an extensive smoothie bar to the gym to help with post-workout cooldowns, and Stanley is known to replace the smoothie fixings with cans of beer from time to time.

Autumn Grove Animal Control

Rarely is it ever stocked with too many animals, Autumn Grove Animal Control usually does a great job of finding lost pets and keeping them safe until the owners could come collect them. Have they caught some weird looking animals along the way? Yes. Has someone ever had a strange and hard to explain infection after a bite from one of those aforementioned animals? Yes. Do people question the things they see there? … Not really! Hey, some dogs are really fucking ugly.

Autumn Grove Antique Mall

Featuring a variety of dealers conveniently beneath one giant roof, there’s no telling what you’ll find if you pop in for a visit. From eclectic novelty items to collectibles and rare antiques, perusing the stalls and aisles is a true treasure hunt. With flea markets monthly, there are even more opportunities to buy or sell a hidden gem.

Autumn Grove Clinic

Situated near Main street, the Autumn Grove Clinic is filled with great physicians and affordable care, no matter the situation.

Autumn Grove Police Department

For the most part, the sleepy town of Autumn Grove doesn’t have a whole lot of...crime. Its police force is more the type to issue a warning and tell people to get a move on down the road. Still, the building is one of the nicest in town--and also one of the oldest. Whether the Dunkin a stone’s throw away was intentional or not? No one will ever know.

Autumn Grove Public Library

Well, it was nice while it lasted. Built originally in 1857, it burned in 1934. And then again in 2020. There’s a massive movement within the town to raise funds to replace the library--but it’s not quite enough to get things going. Especially since there’s still some speculation on whether or not the second fire was set intentionally.

Autumn Grove School District

One of the best school districts near Boston, August Grove’s district boasts high test scores, contented staff, and a surprisingly edible lunch. With the high school near Shoal Bay, the views of the water provide anxiety relief for overburdened students. And with the elementary school near Main Street, access for busy parents has never been easier to affordable after care literally right across the street.

Autumn Grove State Park

Only a fool would think that beaches and cool ocean waves are the only natural wonders Autumn Grove State Park has to offer. Exploring miles of forest trails, setting up a rustic campsite, and fishing in the park’s resplendent lake are just a few activities available to those looking for recreation away from the beach.

Autumn Grove Veterinary

The veterinary clinic has existed for as long as anyone can remember. Previously run by Doc Murphy, the practice was passed down to Dr. Annette Grayson, who currently sees patients of all shapes and sizes.

The Boutiques on Cherry Blossom Square

Located at the center of Autumn Grove, this area features a variety of high end shops, specialty boutiques, and galleries. While these streets lack the same kitschy charm found in the more tourist-oriented areas of Autumn Grove, exploring Cherry Blossom Square is guaranteed to make for a perfect afternoon.

Brewed Awakening

A relatively new addition to Autumn Grove, Brewed Awakening brings craft coffee to a town otherwise running on Dunkin. There’s an obvious pride to the way coffee is sourced and ground fresh in-store, but the quiet rivalry that has developed between this small shop and its nationwide competitor is as interesting to locals as the story of the coffee bean is to tourists.

The Bridge

Hiking through the forest, several people disappear. Only one returns to town, panicked and shrieking, desperately convinced their friends were walking on a bridge when it suddenly collapsed. Townsfolk return to the forest with the sole survivor, in search of the victims. They find a bridge, sturdy and whole, and nothing else. Nobody else. The story has been told several times throughout Autumn Grove’s history. But it’s just a legend. The bridge in the woods exists, standing strong, not collapsed at all, so the story, seemingly repeating itself every few decades, is nothing but fantasy. Right?

Circle Beach

Every coastal town in New England is convinced its beaches are the region’s loveliest. Autumn Grove is no exception; its residents are fast to claim their beaches are the most beautiful and varied, with rocky coves, sandy stretches, and secluded hideaways with waters so blue, you’d swear you were transported to a tropical retreat. Aging locals warn against visiting Circle Beach at night, but any beach can be dangerous at night.

The Codfather

Whether you’re looking for a quick bite after a long day on the water or you’re searching for the very best fried cod in town, this classic seafood shack is calling your name. The freshest catches are served up daily, and patrons can easily enjoy their meal as they stroll along the water, or take a seat in the covered dockside picnic area - just in case they have room for a second helping.

The Cottages on Lighthouse Lane

Though these cottages aren’t directly on the water like some other lodging options, they’re close enough to offer views of the lighthouses that still stand along Autumn Grove’s shores. Cottage guests need only step outside to treat themselves to a serene view of the lighthouses shining nearby.

Deluca Fish & Lobster Wharf

The Deluca family has had an important role in Autumn Grove’s fishing industry for over a century, and residents are fiercely loyal as a result, buying fish and lobsters straight from the source. In fact, the demand for prepared options was so popular and widespread throughout the town, the Delucas had no choice but to open a food counter. Now, in addition to buying fresh lobsters ready to cook at home, visitors can order lobster rolls and other seafood delights to enjoy as they watch the fishing boats come in off the water.

Echo Beach

Every coastal town in New England is convinced its beaches are the region’s loveliest. Autumn Grove is no exception; its residents are fast to claim their beaches are the most beautiful and varied, with rocky coves, sandy stretches, and secluded hideaways with waters so blue, you’d swear you were transported to a tropical retreat. And it's said the clear waters of Echo Beach sometimes wash odd trinkets onto the shore, old items of mysterious origin best left untouched, but that's nothing but legend.

Fiddler on the Reef Performance Center

Committed to enrichment through the arts, Autumn Grove’s performance center presents spectacular events year round, spanning all styles of music and dance. This small performance hall offers all the intimacy of a private performance without sacrificing any of the quality of larger venues. From summer music festivals to seasonal dance showcases, the exciting roster of performers keeps visitors coming time and time again!

The Fisherman's Hook

If any establishment in Autumn Grove is going to stand out as a Locals Only retreat, it’s The Hook. Dimly lit, with a limited menu and an unspoken rule that mixed drinks will never be served on the polished wooden bar, this tavern hasn’t changed in the decades it has been open.

The Forgotten Grove

Those looking to venture into the state park can find many guides to help in their journey, detailing not just the trails, but the specific areas of the forest as well. No official guide makes mention of The Forgotten Grove, however. This grouping of trees is odd, twisted and older than anything immediately nearby. Few have seen these trees. Few who have returned from the forest, anyway.

General Mercantile

Along with many of the town’s larger homes, this store is one of the oldest buildings in Autumn Grove, and it has served the community as a general store since its construction. Originally doubling as a town meeting hall, the mercantile continues to offer a wide range of goods to citizens and tourists alike, though its days of town gatherings might be behind it.

Gerdy’s Gifts

Selling far more than just your quintessential seaside gifts and trinkets, Gerdy’s Gifts features home decor and art pieces from local artisans, as well as a Plant Baby Adoption Center, to fill all your succulent needs. Pick up a selection to eat at your leisure, or pull up a chair and enjoy a cheese board in the cafe. Save 10% on your dine-in purchase when you bring your own wine purchased from Tequila Mockingbird Wine and Spirits. Receipt required.

The Lighthouses

Autumn Grove has three lighthouses along its shores, with a rich history of guiding sailors home and helping them find their way. But some wonder: why three? For a town this size, three seems like a lot. Surely history has simply lost a perfectly logical explanation. It couldn’t be that the lighthouses were built not

Mass United Farmers Market on Beaver Street

Originally opened in 1971, the small market has expanded over the years and now operates year round. Over sixty stalls are now found within the Beaver Street building, offering seasonal produce, dairy products, meats, artisanal baked goods, and seafood, as well as many other local products.

Ocean's Edge Cafe

Open for breakfast and lunch, this cafe offers casual dining with a side of coastal charm. Come for a smoothie or a seasonal breakfast platter, or try one of the Catch of the Day lunch specials.

The Old Well

The old well fell into obsolescence ages ago, yet it remains today, tucked away in the woods. Now and then, locals wonder why it isn’t simply filled in; only a few remember the attempts to do just that. Attempts that never worked. A sign is posted: Please Do Not Throw Coins. This was never meant to be a wishing well. The coins contaminate the water, logic says. What other explanation is there? It isn’t possible that wishes have come true. Magic isn’t real.

The Old Well Inn and The Older Well Inn

Originally built as a summer cottage, this sprawling Victorian manor was divided into two separate homes when the original owner decided he would prefer ocean views from his porch. Too large to move in one piece, the entire property was split and then relocated. Today, the home stands as two rival inns, owned by siblings Minerva and Wesley Sanderson. Their feud is something of local legend, as are the mysterious and haunting tales attached to the properties.

The Oldtimer Diner

A fully-restored example of a Worcester Lunch Car Company diner, The Oldtimer serves Autumn Grove classic American cuisine at any time of day or night. Come in for a midnight milkshake, grab a counter stool to enjoy your breakfast, or fill up on one of the diner’s massive burger combos. No matter what lures you through the door, once you sample the food and take in the diner charm, you’re sure to become a repeat customer.

Perfectly Frank

An Autumn Grove staple since 1951, the stand was established by Francis Walsh and originally sold just hot dogs. The dogs are still fried in peanut oil, but the menu has expanded over the years to include fries, chili, homemade pickles, birch beer, and a true classic, frosted mugs of buttermilk.

The Promenade

It all started with the view. When The Promenade was converted from a private home into a restaurant, it was the sight of sunset over the water that inspired the decision. From there came the restaurant’s unique approach to operating hours: each day, the restaurant opens for a sunrise breakfast service, then remains closed until reopening for sunset dinners. The motive behind this is simple: diners deserve not only the best food, but also the very best views.

The Ripe Plum Bed and Breakfast

Like many of the B&Bs in Autumn Grove, The Ripe Plum has a charming history that appeals to guests as much as the quaint atmosphere of the inn itself. The house was originally designed and built by Ruth and Ivan Belleville, childhood sweethearts who always dreamed of running their very own inn. The two toiled for years before that dream became a reality, and they ran the B&B for nearly fifty years. It then passed to their oldest daughter, and has been in the family for over two hundred years. Guests say the inn is haunted by some of the friendliest ghosts they’ve ever encountered.

Sconehenge

Start your morning right with a fresh croissant and a hot cup of tea, or satisfy your sweet tooth with one of the many pastries baked daily. Showcasing everything from bread to macarons, and most baked goods in between, visiting this French bakery is a must!

Shoal Bay

Every coastal town in New England is convinced its beaches are the region’s loveliest. Autumn Grove is no exception; its residents are fast to claim their beaches are the most beautiful and varied, with rocky coves, sandy stretches, and secluded hideaways with waters so blue, you’d swear you were transported to a tropical retreat. The heart-shaped pebbles common to Shoal Bay are a perfect souvenir for tourists.

The Sidecar

Artful hotel bar, hold the hotel. That was the vibe the owner of this hip bar was going for when the doors were first opened three years ago. While some might say you’re paying more for ambiance than anything else, the craft cocktail menu is impressive, as is the limited menu available at the bar. Old favorites are given new life with creative twists and fresh additions, and that makes an evening at The Sidecar worth the price tag.

Sound and Furry

Equal parts bookstore and cat sanctuary, Sound and Furry is a unique establishment even by Autumn Grove standards, offering patrons a chance to wander the shelves, sample the literature, and lounge comfortably with the furry residents calling the place home.

St. Peter Dock

The little house at the end of the watery dock has stood empty for years, the small lighthouse unused. Bigger lighthouses protect Autumn Grove’s shores, after all. But the buildings are a favorite of local youth, who explore the dusty stairs and the cobwebbed rooms, climbing the lighthouse to the top. Young adults tend to sneak there at night, with bottles of cheap liquor and the giddy excitement of rebellion. The lighthouse is not decrepit enough to be a true danger; the dock, though… Many have slipped. Drowned. It’s a tragedy, really. Nothing more nefarious than that. Just a tragedy.

Staircase to Nowhere

The first reported case of an unusual set of stairs in Autumn Grove was in 1933. Hikers noted noted that they felt a weird energy around them as if full of dread. When they returned to the spot where they remembered seeing the stairs, the structure was gone. Since then, it is not uncommon to stumble across a staircase leading to nowhere. They’re usually made of brick or iron in varying heights. Most of the reports of the moving staircases, which have been largely dismissed as pranks by local schoolchildren, coincide with places where people have gone missing, died, or claim to have witnessed paranormal events.

If nothing else, sample the fudge - just don’t expect one bite to be enough once you do!

Tuna Wharf

Of all the moorings in Autumn Grove, none have inspired more childish tales than Tuna Wharf. For years, children have claimed to see something huge lurking in the water. Generation after generation of kids find their way to the water here, offering up bread for their unseen nautical friend. It’s nothing more than a local legend, imaginations running wild. Any adult will tell you as much. The water around the wharf has no sealife to speak of, in fact, let alone something massive!

Venture Bay Boat & Fishing Tours
